The NSICC, also known as Kearney Lake Masjid, is dedicated to ensuring that Muslim funerals are conducted with the utmost care and respect, in full accordance with Islamic traditions. As the owners of the Halifax Muslim Cemetery, we provide comprehensive support throughout the entire funeral process. Here is a detailed guide outlining the steps involved:
1. Notification of Death:
- Contact the Mosque: Inform the mosque as soon as possible. Our team will assist with the necessary arrangements.

- Backup contact: 902-880-7289
- Death Certificate: This is altogether a different process that a family of the deceased has to obtain a death certificate from the relevant authorities (Access Nova Scotia). Kearney Lake Masjid do not provide any support with this process.
2. Preparation of the Body (Ghusl):
- Ghusl (Ritual Washing): The body is washed and taken care by the Masjid body washing team of the same gender, following the Sunnah. This is a community service provided at the Kearney Lake Masjid facility.
- Shrouding (Kafan): The body is then wrapped in a simple white shroud, typically consisting of three pieces for men and five pieces for women.
3. Funeral Prayer (Salat al-Janazah):
- Transportation to the Mosque: The family is responsible to transport the body to the community center for further process of Ghusl and Janazah prayers.

- Salat al-Janazah: The community gathers to perform the funeral prayer. This prayer is held after one of the obligatory prayers and can be attended by both men and women.
4. Burial (Dafn):
- Transportation to the Cemetery: After the funeral prayer, the body is transported to the Muslim cemetery – It is the responsibility of the family.
- Burial: The body is placed in the grave on its right side, facing the Qiblah (towards Mecca). It is customary for those present to place three handfuls of soil into the grave while reciting prayers.
5. Post-Burial Practices:
- Dua and Recitation: After the burial, the sheikh will make dua for the deceased and the family.
- Condolences and Support: The community offers condolences and support to the family of the deceased. It is customary to visit the family and provide assistance during this difficult time – The family can book and setup the time by connecting with the Mosque management.
